Cities of translators
Expeditions to international translation scenes
Cities of translators invites us to see prominent literary metropolises as spaces of translation, and to explore them as the stages of translators.
Each city is explored through two viewpoints: that of a translator who lives in the city and knows it well, and that of a translator discovering the city for the first time through the expedition. Together, the pair mobilize a diverse network, organize explorations, and develop a program that exposes the city’s nature as a city of translators.
Translators, writers, journalists, and explorers of other genres are invited to investigate the city of translators through certain questions: How and where does translation culture of the city play out? On what stages and with what actors? Is there a consciousness of this culture, and if so, how is it manifested? In current networks and infrastructures? In the cultural memory of a city? How do translators shape a city? And what role does a city play in the work of a translator? What (hi)stories of translation does a city tell? Where are new expressions of translation made visible?
Texts, blogs, and images will be created in the course of the expedition and made available here as multi-voice collages.
City of translators will shed new light on the role translators play in cultural exchange, and will share new, untold stories.
