TOLEDO Translation diaries

The TOLEDO translation diaries invite readers into the experiences of translators and allow us to discover the materials that accumulate around and enrich a translated text. They offer insights into the hidden associations and imagery of a text.

Translation creates paratexts: through correspondence with authors and editors, through research, documentation of the individual steps of a translation, reflections on the decision-making process, or glossaries of the original text. Yet most of these materials disappear after delivery of the translation—they’re often neither saved nor collected. In the context of TOLEDO, we want to make these metaliterary treasures accessible: we want to encourage translators to document their work and to publish this, accompanied by reflections, in journal form on our website.

The TOLEDO translation diaries establish a new digital series that takes translators seriously as close readers and commentators of a text. More than simply a look behind the scenes, in these journals, original and translation enter into a productive dialogue that the reader can trace and understand.
