Journale Lucy Fricke’s Töchter: A Translation Road Trip

LIGHTS, CAMERA, ACTION!

We imagine translators as withdrawn, people who spend more time with books than with their fellow human beings. That we spend a lot of time with books is probably true. However, the question of whether we are quiet and taciturn is debateable… In any case, we very much enjoyed talking about our work.

An important place of exchange for us, for example, is the Sommerakademie für Übersetzer·innen deutschsprachiger Literatur, which takes place every year at the Literarisches Colloquium Berlin. Parallel to our journal, we have also been working with Lucy Fricke on a film project for the opening of the Sommerakademie 2020 this year. The film stages an exchange between the author and her translators and deals with travelling, writing and translating. The film begins in Istabul. Where Lucy was working on her new novel, and is then continued in Buenos Aires, Berlin and Hamburg, with additional detours to our publishing houses.

For this many-voiced conversation, we went for a walk by the water, perhaps because water is a symbol of connection and also of transformation – from one language into another…

And now it begins: Lights out – and action!
