A Journal: Translating Gipi's Special Moments with Fake Applause

Myriam Alfano

In Besondere Momente mit falschem Applaus [Special Moments with Fake Applause], the Italian comic artist Gian Alfonso Pacinotti (Gipi) creates remarkable new planes of meaning by connecting word and image. The translator swims, walks through flames and searches, blindfolded, for German equivalents.

Watch Out, I'm About to Sing

Sandra Hetzl

"I believe that when telling stories (and maybe also when translating?), it makes a difference whether you feel like the mistress of your own house, in which case you might then make grand compassionate gestures such as welcoming "foreigners" to your home. Or whether you feel, at your core, that you're no more than a shadow slinking along the walls of said house. A translator's name and skin colour don't necessarily reveal which of these perspectives she has."

A new song, a better song - Translating Poetry

Judith Zander

"But this attitude doesn’t bring us closer to world peace, nor does it lead to good translations. The two, I’d argue, are directly linked: the whole idea of translation as such – and also as a form of what used to be called “intercultural understanding” – is reduced to absurdity if the prerequisite for it is that author and translator be as similar as possible. (This begs the question of what similarity actually means.)"

On Fear and Courage in Translation

Tanja Handels

"Like I said, translation isn’t possible without courage. Especially when there is distance between myself and the text. Translating, in this case, extends both my translator-self and my frequently disheartened everyday-self. I'm changed by the texts I translate when I allow myself to be touched by them."
